Northern Star Mining Vent and Emergency Egress Shafts

The project was located at the Malartic-Midway mine site, between Malartic and Val d’Or, Quebec on Route 117. The scope of work was to drill two holes of 60” diameter to host steel pipe lined vent shafts through 17 meters of overburden and 15 meters of bedrock.

Step one was to install two 64” diameter steel pipe casings through the clay overburden with a 120 ton Manitowoc crane and vibratory hammer. After the pipe was in place a 60” diameter shaft was drilled through the 64” diameter pipe and 15 meters into the bedrock. After the drilling was completed, a 58” diameter steel pipe casing was installed into the 60” drilled rock hole and grouted in place.
